Department of Bengali

The Department of Bengali was created in the year 1926. From the very outset Bengali was one of the Compulsory subjects for the Arts students. In 1949, the affiliation of Bengali Honours was obtained making it a ‘landmark year’ for the Department of Bengali.

The department as it stands today inherits a rich past. The Bengali Library society was formed in the very earlier days. Thought-provoking discussions, debates, were organised & held in the college by the B.L.S. in which Bengali Literary Giants like Sri Rabindranath Tagore (1935), Rai Bahadur Dinesh Chandra Sen (1933) & Mohit Lal Majumdar (1951) gave their active participations.

The legacy of the rich heritage is being enjoyed and continued even in to-days academic environment of the Bengali Department. Eminent Scholars like Sri Khudiram Das (Critic), Sri Saibal Mitra (Novelist), Sri Sabyasachi Deb (Poet) etc. served the department in recent past. Few of the teachers of Bengali got chance at universities from this college (i.e. Prof Urmi Roychowdhuri, Dr. Sandip Kr Mondal). Apart from this, As a result of the cumulative efforts of the various teachers of the past and present, the students of this department is working in different, schools, Madrasas, Colleges, Newspapers and in other medias with much pride and glory.
