Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry started its journey with the college itself on 1926 as the then Islamia College, to impart I. Sc. under C.U. After independence, the college was rechristened as Central Calcutta College, U.G. Science was granted, old two storied college building was raised to another floor and the entire second floor was allotted for the Chemistry department. Department shifted from ground floor to top floor in 1960-61. First batch of B.Sc. (Chem.) started during 1963-64. Pre-university and pre-medical courses were also introduced in the department. From 1978-79, the University of Calcutta started plus two course for B.Sc. (Chem.) and discontinued from 1999. From 1980 physical and biochemical laboratory was introduced by converting western portico into a laboratory with three cubicles. During 2000-01 whole of the pass and honors laboratory floors was totally dismantled and reconstructed and these are still in the process of being remodeled. Since 2007-08 a space for the organic research laboratory and on the subsequent years the same for the inorganic and theoretical research laboratories are constructed.

Due to the generous support from the different research funding agencies of the Government of India like DBT, UGC, CSIR, DST and the Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal, the department is equipped with FT-IR (Perkin-Elmer), UV-VIS Spectrophotometer and Fluorimeter (Perkin-Elmer), Rotary Vacuum Evaporator (Eyela), Powerful Aspirator (Eyela), Low temp. Bath with Magnetic Stirrer (Eyela), Semi-micro Balance (Mettler- Toledo ). The present researches in progress are on different topics such as Synthesis and application oriented organic chemistry, Supramolecular Chemistry, Luminescent nano materials, Computational chemistry, Multi-component reactions, methodology & application oriented organic chemistry etc.
