Department of History

The Department of History was established in the year 1926. In the initial phase only the male Muslim students were allowed to take admission to the department. After independence, the door of this department was open to all male students irrespective of religious affiliation. Since 1990, the girl students were permitted to take admission in this department. The department can boast of a rich legacy of eminent faculty members such as Prof. Tapan Roy Choudhuri, M. Saber Khan, Haridas Mukherjee. Well known scholars and historians of the present time like Basudev Chattopadhyay, Himadri Sekhar Bandopadhyay, Susnata Das were the students of this department.

Department organised several seminars. In the year 2002 during the Platinum Jubilee Celebration Prof Tapan Roy Choudhuri delivered a lecture on ‘Rabindranath'.on the same year Prof. Barun de delivered a lecture on ‘relevance of maulana azad in the present context. in 2003 Prof Arun Dasgupta delivered a lecture on ‘Feudalism in Medieval Europe.' in 2007 Prof Chittabrata Palit and Prof Ranjit Sen commenced a lecture on 'mangal pandey-revolt of 1857'. In 2011, Department organised a UGC sponsored national level seminar in collaboration with political science and philosophy departments. thrust of the seminar was ‘visibility/invisibility of women in Indian perspective'. Prof, Tanika Sarkar of J.N.U. and Prof. Samita Sen, Director of Women Studies, J.U. were the distinguished speakers. Prof Subhas Ranjan Chakrabarty of erstwhile Presidency College had chaired the history session. Departmental students actively participated in different activities such as publishing wall magazines, participating in different seminars and talks, presenting their papers in college seminars and external competitions. Departmental students actively participated in a workshop on gender sensitisation funded by UGC/CPE. This Department organised an extempore competition on ‘Relevance of Vivekananda and his life'in 2013.
