The Department of Statistics of Maulana Azad College bears its glorious existence by creating its separate entity as a centre of excellence in education in Statistics over the past two decades. The department came into being before 1980 only with plus-two course under the approval of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. From the academic year 1981-82 it started Pass-Course in Statistics under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta with one full-time teacher only. However, from the year 1983, the teaching strength rose to two. A good number of students of Honours in Economics, Mathematics as well as Physics, who had opted for Statistics at the Pass level, have been benefited to a large extent from this department.
